Tap Dance at ADTC
During the 1930s, 40s and 50s, the best tap dancers moved from Vaudeville to cinema and television. Prominent tap dancers of this period include Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers and Shirley Temple. In the 1950s, tap dance declined, while rock and roll, pop music and jazz dance emerged. Since many believe that jazz dance evolved out of tap dance, the two styles have many moves in common. The 1979 Emmy award winning PBS documentary, No Maps in My Taps, helped begin the recent revival of tap dance. National Tap Dance Day in the U.S. is now celebrated May 25, the birthday of famous tapper, Bill “Bojangles” Robinson.
