20 Girl Power Songs (for dancers) – #movetolove2019

March is Women’s History Month, and we’re celebrating amazing women (& girls!) in dance history and pop culture. As we discussed with our 20 Self-Love Songs (for dancers) last month, we believe the world needs strong & inspired girls like us doing more of what we love.

So we’ve decided to continue our #movetolove2019 series, and this month spotlight performances from our dance camps with the Friday Night Show theme, “It’s Great To Be A Girl.” We’ve chosen 20 girl power songs that echo our dance camp mission: to empower girls to move to love.

What exactly do we mean by “move to love”?

MOVE – to pass from one place or position to another.

LOVE – to access the part of our mind that is connected to Spirit; the source of peace, joy, happiness and a whole bunch of other “positive” emotions.

So move to love means to move to a new place (or state of mind) – the state of mind connected to your Spirit (peace, joy, happiness…all that positive stuff). Please share your inspirational dance videos on Instagram this month! #movetolove2019 @danceadtc

Girl Power Song #5 – “Confident” by Demi Lovato

As the saying goes, “Confidence is our best accessory. We should never leave home without it.”

“Confident” by Demi Lovato is an amazing girl power anthem. This song reminds us that when it comes to our self-worth, only one opinion truly matters – our own. And that is the one we should most carefully evaluate because we tend to be our own worst critic.

The good news is that we can be confident without the externals that society seems to value, like wealth, achievement, status, etc. Here are six steps we can take right now to become more confident:

  1. Be mindful. By simply becoming aware of our negative self-talk, we begin to distance ourselves from the feelings it brings up. This enables us to identify with them less.
  2. Change the story. We all have a narrative we’ve created about ourselves that shapes our self-image. If we want to change that story, we have to understand where it came from. All negative thoughts are learned, which means they can be unlearned. We can start with affirmations – what do we wish we believed about ourself?
  3. Avoid comparing. Just because someone appears happy on social media or even in person doesn’t mean they are happy. Comparisons only lead to negative self-talk, which leads to anxiety and stress.
  4. Celebrate our gifts. Albert Einstein said, “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing it is stupid.” We all have gifts and challenges – we may be a brilliant dancer, but a bad cook…neither quality defines our core worth. When we fail at something, we still need to remember the ways we “rock” so we have a more realistic picture of ourself.
  5. Exercise. Studies show a correlation between exercise and higher self-esteem… if we want to be more confident, we should take something off our endless “to do” list in favor of making time for exercise.
  6. Help others. Being of service to others helps take us out of our head. When we are able to help someone else, it makes us focus less on our own issues.

So instead of navigating the world – and our relationships – in search of evidence that validates our self-limiting beliefs, let’s choose to take control of our self-esteem. Let’s remember that we can be confident TODAY by embracing this six-fold path.
