History of Jazz Dance

Since the 1920s, the term "jazz dance" has been used to describe a forever-changing form of popular and creative dance movement. Jazz dance represents our popular culture, and as our culture changes, so does the appearance of jazz dance . This means that social dances of the 1920s like the Charleston are known as jazz dances, but so are the Broadway dances of choreographer Bob Fosse, the modern dances of Alvin Ailey, the shortened sounds of tap dancing and the popping and locking movements of hip hop .

Jazz Dance at ADTC Overnight Camps

Whether you're an absolute beginner or experienced performer, we have some of the best jazz dance faculty on the planet. Jazz style is layered over the traditional technique of ballet. Campers dance to the up-beat, popular sounds of today while working on basic body isolations of the head, shoulders, ribcage, feet and arms. In addition to learning a full performance piece, beginner dance groups master basic jazz steps, while more advanced dance groups focus on developing rhythmic awareness and individual expression.

Jazz Dance at ADTC ULTIMATE Overnight Camps

Jazz dance is offered as one of the four core classes each session-week at our ULTIMATE Overnight Dance Camps, but campers also take core classes in hip hop, Broadway dance & sometimes even contemporary or lyrical at these camps. Click an ADTC ULTIMATE camp location below for more details!

Overnight Jazz Dance INTENSIVES

Jazz dance is the main focus at our Jazz Dance INTENSIVES. Our INTENSIVE Jazz Dance Camps differ from our ULTIMATE Overnight Dance Camps only in that the dancing focuses on jazz dance styles alone (as compared to jazz in combination with other dance styles like hip hop, Broadway and lyrical). At our Jazz Dance INTENSIVES, campers take four dance classes per day that explore the many variations of jazz. Custom Jazz Dance Camps & Custom Jazz Dance Choreography

American Dance Training Camp offers a team of renowned jazz dance instructors worldwide who teach at our ULTIMATE and INTENSIVE dance camps. Our jazz dance instructors can also choreograph pieces for that big recital, competition or event you have coming up &/or travel to your studio, school or private location for customized boot camps!

Competition Rules: All dances must be less than 3 minutes long (ANY dance style). Participants must indicate whether they choreographed the dance themselves (if not, you must give credit to the original choreographer). American Dance Idol has three categories: group dances (3 + dancers); pair dances (2 dancers) and solo dances (1 dancer).

Prizes: In each category, first runners-up receive a $25 iTunes gift certificate; and winners receive an iPod Nano (plus the chance to have their dance video, bio and an interview featured on the ADTC website!)
